Mr Cain goes up in smoke

For a moment there, this morning, it looked like Herman Cain could survive this sexual harassment scandal. Now? I don't think he has a chance in hell of coming out unscathed - and that spells the end of his run. He just doesn't know it, yet.

The biggest problem isn't that the scandal exists - after Anita Hill, it's enough to destroy a campaign for the House, never mind the presidency! - but that he's being a tad inconsistent about it. And as Kenneth Vogel, the Politico reporter who uncovered the story, just said: he's going to continue to dig into Mr Cain's life. On the other side, he's whining that the story must have come within the Republican field. That whining not a good thing for a presidential candidate. Add in that he freely admits he doesn't know a thing about politics or the political process - and you have Jimmy Carter on steroids. But not as nice. And let's not forget that ad...

While there's probably nothing else, the fact that there might be some smoke is going to have the other campaigns crawling all over it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the mud being flung before too long.
